Photography has always been a passion of mine. I love provoking emotion, curiosity, and a different way of thinking through my photos. I took a strong interest in war and war photography during the “All Quiet On The Western Front” unit. I was interested in the war photography after the in class activity in which we analyzed war photographs for the emotions the photos depicted. They really got me thinking about how war photography impacted society because the photos are very graphic and I’m sure the general public found this shocking. While reading the book by Erich Maria Remarque I began to ask the question; How did war photography during World War I impact society? World World I was the first war where photography was widely used by both profession, amateur, and militaries alike. I wanted to find out how modern photography was changed and influenced after WWI. My goal in researching war photography is to better understand the history of photography and the old way of taking and developing images and how they were viewed. I, initially, was researching how World War I affected photography but after concluding that the civil war and the previous wars had a more significant impact on photography I shifted my focus to how war photography during World War I impacted society. This new topic I chose was easier to research because it was more specific and there was a higher quality of sources that I found. I chose my sources based on their reputability, the best one I found was the International Encyclopedia of The First World War and several several several York Times articles. I discovered that the answer to my research question was much different than I expected, which turned out to be interesting and I learned more. I was expecting to find out that there was an increase of photo technology but in reality that wasn’t the case at all. I found out that there was more of an affect of society than photography itself. Overall, I learned a lot from my research project and it was a good experience.
